During fasting, maintaining good oral hygiene is important to prevent bad breath. Here are some tips:

1. Brush your teeth properly before and after Sahrii and Iftar.

2. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.

3. Don’t forget to brush your tongue, as bacteria can accumulate there.

4. Floss daily to remove food particles stuck between your teeth.

5. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water during non-fasting hours.

6. Consider using a mouthwash or natural remedies like miswak to freshen your breath.

Remember, good oral hygiene is essential not just during Ramzan, but all year round..

CLOVES GAINST BAD-BREATH

As humans, regardless of whether we eat or fast, poor hygiene can lead to bad breath.

Brushing your teeth before bed and upon waking up is a good practice to prevent bad breath.

Additionally, you can fill an empty jar with water and cloves, then swish some of the mixture in your mouth and rinse after brushing your teeth.

Considering my allergy to toothbrush, mostly after brushing my teeth with miswak, i rinse my mouth with the clove mixture.

Maintaining good oral hygiene not only benefits your health but also gives you the confidence to speak in public and can even save the lives of those destined to associate with you.

Not everyone takes unsolicited advice on bad breath graciously, but it can be terribly disturbing to those who are affected by your halitosis.

And only the fool distorts the meaning of a fasting person’s breath being sweeter than misk in Allah’s sight to mean a justification for bad breath.

Before, I used to feel sorry for individuals whose partners struggle with chronic bad breath. However, upon reflection, if they are not persuasive enough to address the potential harm that their spouse’s bad breath poses to themselves and others, they may deserve the consequences of enduring it.

Regarding the cloves mixture, it’s helpful to keep one in your car, another in your office, and one at home. This way, whenever you are about to engage with others publicly, you can quickly refresh your breath.

Is it permissible to use toothpaste while fasting?

Yes, but you should be careful not to swallow the toothpaste. Anything that goes into your stomach during fasting can break your fast unless it’s not intentional. Allah forgives our unintentional mistakes. However, it is recommended to use miswak (chewing stick/twig brush) like the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) was reported to have practised during his lifetime. Cleanliness is next to godliness. May we benefit abundantly from the holy month of Ramadan.

‘Bad breath at Fasting’

1. Decreased Saliva Production: When you’re not eating or drinking, saliva production decreases. Saliva helps to wash away food particles and bacteria in the mouth, so a decrease in saliva can lead to bacterial overgrowth and bad breath.

Dry Mouth, Fasting can lead to dry mouth, which exacerbates bad breath. Without sufficient saliva to wash away food particles and bacteria, bad breath can become more noticeable.

2. Ketosis: During fasting, the body may enter a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. Ketones produced during ketosis can have a strong odor, which can contribute to bad breath.

3. Bacterial Growth: In the absence of food and the cleansing action of saliva, bacteria in the mouth can multiply, leading to an increase in odor-causing compounds.

Best possible solution could be, staying hydrated (drinking plenty of water at Sehri), oral hygiene, and use of Miswak at day time.

The prophet Muhammad (s.a.w), peace be upon him said: ” By the one in Whose Hand my soul is, the breath of the fasting person is more pleasant with Allah than the smell of musk.”
